A lot is happening in the legislature. The new majority is working hard for the people of Onondaga County. But there is a limit on what we can do when the County Executive vetoes our legislation. We need bipartisan support to override a veto. If you watch or attend our meetings, you will see most items pass unanimously as we all know we are there to make sure our departments have what they need to provide services to residents.
It has been surprising to me how hard we have had to fight to implement 12 year term limits on the county executive and comptroller office. 12 years (3 terms) was the Republicans proposal last year for term limits on county legislators which voters approved by over 70%. 12 years to me already seems to be a compromise as most term limits are for 8 years (2 terms). Yet there are now two proposals before the legislature, one to implement a 12 year term limit (3 terms) and one to implement a 16 years term limit (4 terms). I can’t even find an example of any other office that has a 16 year term limit.
I did not run for a seat in the legislature to be a rubber stamp for the county executive. We have only had 4 county executives in the last 64 years which equals to an average of 16 years. 16 years doesn’t feel like change, it feels like the status quo.
The legislature could come together and pass 12 year term limits on the county executive and comptroller, sending this proposal to you in November to have the final say. But we need to hear from you! Email legislature@onondaga.gov by July 7th and let us know what you want to see on your ballot this November, 12 or 16 year term limits?
Thank you.
